Unit 10 – From the Asylum to Care in the Community: from Paternalism to Autonomous Decision Making

1.2 Learning Objectives
The main learning objectives of the unit are:
  • Introduce students to the history of psychiatry and asylum care, and related ethical issues.
  • Introduce students to the development of asylum care in Britain in the nineteenth century
  • Introduce students to the history of hysteria, as a way of controlling women and their sexuality.
  • Introduce students to the shift from asylum care to care in the community, and the issues of neglect the new system faces.
  • Introduce students to the legal development of LPAs and DNARs, discussing some of the criticisms they face.
