North-eastern part of the Asclepieion of Epidaurus

Story of the object
The Asclepieion of Epidaurus was the most famous Asclepieion of antiquity. Asclepius’ worship there probably begun around the 6th cenutry BC. The area where the Asclepieion was spread was quite large and devided in two parts: the mountainous and the lowland part. In the lowland part, numerous buildings were located, such as the temple, the tholos, the stoa with the Enkoimeterion, the theatre, the “restaurant”, the katagogion and the stadium. In the mountainous part, other constructions may be found such as the temple with the altar to Apollo, a large stoa, the mosque of the Muses and an establishment where the priests resided.
